Evakona is a language school specializing in English learning, so students with little or no confidence in their English skills are welcome. Even those at a beginner level at the time of enrollment can join the program.<br>While progress varies from person to person, students who attend classes diligently and commit to regular self-study have the potential to improve from a beginner to an intermediate level within one year.
New Zealand high schools have a national curriculum that fosters individuality, independence and confidence. With the importance on student autonomy, students can choose from 40-60 subjects. There are also a variety of practical subjects available.
Evakona provides continuous support for several years, from the time of enrollment through to graduation from a local high school.<br>During the first year at Evakona, multiple support staff are available, so students can consult with them at any time if they have any concerns or need assistance.<br>Even after students transition to local schools, staff are based in each region and continue to support them in coordination with host families and schools. For example, we conduct meetings three to five times a year, provide advice and support regarding homestay life and academic matters, share regular progress reports, and offer assistance in emergencies, including accompanying students to hospitals when necessary.
We carefully select high schools where international department staff provide strong support for both students’ academic progress and daily life.<br>We also choose schools where the number of international students is balanced with the number of staff, ensuring that each student receives close attention and support.<br>In addition, the schools are located in smaller towns rather than large cities, offering a safer and more secure environment for students.
At Evakona, students participate in activity lessons every Friday. These activities include a wide variety of both indoor and outdoor experiences. For example, activities may include kayaking, surfing, banana boat rides, farm park visits, hiking, mini golf, pizza making, art, mosaic work, and Māori crafts.<br>In addition, the High School Preparation Course includes two overnight camps where students cook in teams. We also host fun seasonal events such as Halloween parties.
Homestay (has three meals provided). Students live with experienced local hosts and enjoy everyday New Zealand home life.<br>By immersing themselves in a local home environment, students can experience daily routines, culture, and food firsthand. Living with a homestay also helps improve English skills and fosters independence.<br>Hosts come from a variety of backgrounds, including different family structures and nationalities. Students are carefully matched with hosts based on their profiles, and we introduce the best possible homestay for each student.<br>Some local high schools also offer boarding options.
In New Zealand, the government has established a Code of Practice that educational institutions must follow when accepting international students. Homestays are carefully screened and registered in accordance with the New Zealand Government’s Code of Practice for the Care of International Students.<br>We introduce high-quality homestays to ensure that students can enjoy a safe and comfortable stay.
Students travel to Evakona by walking or cycling. For those staying farther away, some homestays provide transportation.<br>Both Whitianga and Thames are small towns, so there are no city buses or trains available. At local high schools, students typically commute by school bus, public bus, walking, cycling, or through transportation provided by their homestays.
Options include universities or vocational schools in New Zealand (or foundation courses), as well as employment opportunities in your home country or study in other countries.<br>University admission is influenced by students’ academic performance during high school.
We usually recommend allowing 3 to 6 months for preparation to ensure everything can be arranged smoothly. As this may vary depending on the duration of your study abroad, please feel free to contact us for more information.
