Short-term Course
If you are a Japanese national planning to participate in a short-term study abroad or language program in New Zealand for up to three months, you are eligible for visa waiver status and do not need to apply for a student visa.
However, you are required to obtain an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) in advance, and you must also provide proof of international travel insurance upon entry into New Zealand.
On the other hand, if you hold a nationality that is not eligible for visa waiver status (including countries other than Japan), you are required to obtain an appropriate visa prior to arrival, even for stays of less than three months. Please check the visa requirements based on your nationality and complete the necessary procedures before departure.
For a list of visa waiver countries, please refer to the link below.
Travel Insurance
In New Zealand, all international students are required to hold valid travel insurance. For details on the coverage of travel insurance, please refer to the following Studentsafe Policy.
Medical Expenses
International students in New Zealand are not eligible for medical expense exemptions. If you receive treatment from a doctor during your stay, you will be responsible for the costs. For details on medical expense exemptions, you can visit the New Zealand Ministry of Health's website.
Accident Compensation System
New Zealand has the ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation), a government agency for accident compensation. International students are also covered under the accident compensation scheme. Compensation for treatment costs related to injuries or accidents that occur within New Zealand is provided. In some cases, there may be out-of-pocket expenses. For more details, please visit the ACC's website.
